College Hoops Player of the Day for Friday, February 7, 2014
The two top teams in the Big East were in action Friday night, Villanova and Creghton remaining tied for the conference lead at 9-1 with convincing wins on their respective home courts.
Villanova gave coach Jay Wright his 400th career victory with a 70-53 splattering of Seton Hall, while the Creighton Blue Jays and star forward, Doug McDermott, were pasting DePaul, 78-66.
Wright has 278 wins at Villanova; the rest were earned at Hofstra.
McDermott, the leading candidate for player of the year honors, didn't have his best shooting game, going 9-for-21, but he made up for his misfires by nailing 13 of 14 from the charity stripe en route to a game-high 32 points, well above his 25.3 average. 4-for-6 in the early going, McDermott's teammates picked up the pace after Seton Hall tied the game at 13-all, going on a 13-2 spurt punctuated by a McDermott dunk, midway through the first half, taking control of the game which they led nearly all the way.
The Pirates cut the lead to two points on a couple of occasions in the second half and to one point with under eight minutes to play, but each time, Creighton had answers. With 5:30 left, the Bluejays' lead was four, until McDermott scored nine straight points - seven from the foul line - in just under three minutes, to put the game out of reach.
McDermott reached another milestone during the game, canning his 1,000th field goal during the contest. He is the first Division I player to achieve that mark since Calbert Cheaney did it from 1989 through 1993. According to ESPN, McDermott also passed J.J. Redick for 17th on the all-time Division I scoring list.
McDermott, the nation's second-leading scorer behind Niagara's Antoine Mason (26.0), was also the game's high rebounder, with nine, though the Blue Demons held a 41-31 edge on the boards.
Creighton's complete 19-3 record includes losses to San Diego State, George Washington and Providence. They are ranked #12 in the current AP poll. #6 Villanova sports a 21-2 record, with losses to Syracuse and Creighton. The two Big East powerhouses meet again on February 16 in a game that will likely determine the conference champion.

Doug McDermott's Season-High 39 Points Carries Creighton Past St. John's, 63-60
College Hoops Player of the Day for Tuesday, January 28, 2014
When one talks about Creighton basketball, one name always comes up: Doug McDermott.
The four-year senior star has led the Bluejays to an 8-1 record and first place in their first year as a member of the Big East, following McDermott's leadership for three years in the Missouri Valley conference.
Getting to that 8-1 mark (18-3 overall) did not take the usual route in Creighton's 63-60 win over St. John's, Tuesday night.
First, it was the lowest score in any of Creighton's wins this season. The Bluejays scored 53 points in a loss to George Washington in December and average 81.3 points per game, 22nd nationally. The Bluejays also turned the ball over 17 times and had only 13 assists (they average 18.1, tops nationally).
Besides shooting under their average (49.3%) and having just one player in double figures, Creighton was able to emerge victorious due to McDermott's season-high 39 points, on 15-for-26 shooting, including five of nine from beyond the arc, with four of five free throws and six rebounds.
McDermott took more than half of Creighton's 47 shots and accounted for roughly 2/3rds of their 23 field goals. Creighton led, 29-25, at the break. McDermott scored 20 of those first half points. Creighton led nearly the entire game and was up by as many as 18 midway through the second half, but, St. John's tied the score at 60-all on a pair of free throws by Rysheed Jordan with 11 seconds left.
After a St. John's time out, the Bluejays got the ball to McDermott, who launched a game-winning three-pointer with just two seconds left on the clock, providing the winning margin.
It was the seventh time this season McDermott has scored 30 or more points. He's been in double figures in all but one of Creghton's games.

Creighton Goes to 4-0 Behind Doug McDermott's 33 Points, 15 Boards
College Hoops Player of the Day for Saturday, November 23, 2013
When basketball scouts and pundits start making up lists of the top pro prospects, there's going to be one name at or near the top of all of them: Creighton's Doug McDermott.
The 6'8" senior forward is not only a scoring machine, but a tireless rebounder, great passer and team leader. McDermott's been a mainstay at College Hoops Daily, named as player of the day seven times, including Saturday's 33-point, 15-rebound effort in an 82-72 win over Tulsa, sending the Golden Hurricane to their fourth loss without a win, while the Blue Jays improved to 4-0 on the season.
McDermott missed his first four shots, but still finished 9-for-17 from the field. Scoring just 12 in the first half, Creighton was clinging to a one-point lead at the break (42-41), but McDermott took control in the second half, pumping in 21, including three treys, as the Blue Jays pulled away for the victory. McDermott made 12 of 15 from the line, adding a couple of steals and two assists.
The Blue Jays return to action this coming Thursday night against Arizona State as part of the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton, California, a game that will air nationally on ESPN2.

#13 Creighton Goes to 16-1 Behind Doug McDermott's 39 Points
College Hoops Player of the Day for Friday, January 11, 2013
Hitting 15 of 19 shots from the field, Doug McDermott had his way against Missouri State as the Creighton Bluejays improved to 16-1 and 5-0 in the MVC with a 72-54 romp at Missouri State.
McDermott's season-high tally was the second-most he's ever scored in a college game. Last season, he lit up Bradley for 44 points in a 92-83 Creighton victory.
Nearly flawless in his execution, McDermott hit three of four from three-point range and six of seven from the foul line, also collecting 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
Averaging 23.6 points per game, McDermott is third in scoring nationally, close behind Virginia Tech's Erick Green (24.6) and C.J. McCollum of Lehigh (23.9).
Vreighton's only loss came in an 83-70 setback by Boise State on November 28. Since then, they've won 10 straight and have a pair of important games upcoming: Tuesday, January 15, against Northern Iowa and Saturday, January 19, at 15-1 Wichita State, currently 4-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Doug McDermott's Career-High 45 Lifts Creighton over Providence
College Hoops Player of the Day for Saturday, March 8, 2014
Just when it appears that Doug McDermott can do no more to secure college basketball's player of the year honors, he goes beyond the pale with an over-the-top performance such as his 45 points in Saturday's 88-73 victory over Providence.
McDermott hit 17 of 25 shots against the Friars, scoring more than half of his team's points, including 5-for-7 from beyond the arc and six of nine from the foul line. The senior forward continues to lead the nation in scoring, upping his average to 26.5 points per game.
Saturday's tour de force featured seven boards and a pair of assists, and was a season-and-career-high for McDermott, eclipsing the 39 he had against Villanova on February 16 and the 44 he put up against Bradley in the 2011-12 season. His output helped the Bluejays snap a two-game losing streak and solidified a second-place finish in the Big East for Creighton at 14-4. Interestingly, 16-2 Villanova's only conference losses were to Creighton. Both will have first round byes in the upcoming Big East tournament.
McDermott also became just the eighth player in Division I history to reach 3000 points in his career, making his final appearance at the CenturyLink Center an historic one, passing Oscar Robertson and Hersey Hawkins into seventh place on the all-time scoring list.

Doug McDermott Goes for 37 Points in Creighton Win over UMKC
College Hoops Player of the Day for Monday, November 11, 2013
As the top returning scorer from last season, Doug McDermott doesnt have much to prove to the college basketball world; he's done most of that over his three years as a Creighton Bluejay.
After scoring a pedestrian 20 points in Creighton's 107-61 win over Alcorn State Friday night, McDermott was back in superstar mode with 37 against the UMKC Kangaroos in a routine, 96-70 victory.
Hitting 15 of 25 shots from the field - including 5-for-10 on three-pointers - McDermott felt he shoudl have made more shots, not exactly what future Creighton opponents want to hear.
As Crieghton dominated the score and the boards, the 6;8" senior forward grabbed seven rebounds. The Bluejays out-rebounded the Kangaroos, 51-35 amd hit 51.5% of their shots, to 37.7% for UMKC (University of Missouri - Kansas City).
McDermott's 37 were the second-most scored in a single game this season, just a point behind Drake's Richard Carter's effort from Saturday.
Tuning up for their first season in the reconstructed Big East, the Bluejays next take to the hardwood on Saturday, November 16 at St. Joseph's.

Doug McDermott Matches Season High as Crieghton Pounds Villanova Again
College Hoops Player of the Day for Sunday, February 16, 2014
Caris LeVert scored a career-high 25 points for Michigan, but Wisconsin's Frank Kaminski had 25 of his own for Wisconsin, along with 11 rebounds, to lead the Badgers to a 75-62 victory at Ann Arbor.
While those efforts were laudable, it was Creighton's brilliant Doug McDermott who had the game of the day, matching his season high with 39 points on 13-for-17 shooting to lead the #18 Bluejays to a 101-80 triumph over visiting #6 Villanova.
McDermott made four of six from three-point range, was 9-for-9 from the foul line, had seven rebounds and an assist. McDermott passed Larry Bird on the all-time college scoring list, taking 13th place. McDermott remains the #2 scorer in the nation, behind Niagara's Antoine Mason.
21-4 Creighton leads the Big East with an 11-2 mark over 10-2 Villanova. The Bluejays handed Villanova another loss earlier in the season, ripping them 96-68 in January.

Creighton Wins MVC Tourney on Doug McDermott's 33 Points; William Buford Leads Buckeyes to Win, Three-way Tie in Big Ten
College Hoops Player of the Day for Sunday, March 4, 2012
There were two really big games on Sunday that mattered in terms of upcoming seeds n the NCAA tournament. The first was a barn-burner of a Missouri Valley tournament final and the other resulted in a three-way tie for the Big Ten regular season championship.
In St. Louis, #25 Creighton was pushed to overtime by a stubborn Illinois State squad intent on winning their way into the NCAAs. In the end, however, it was the Bluejays chasing off the Redbirds, 83-79 in OT behind likely MVC player of the year, Doug McDermott who paced all scorers with 33 points on 12 of 18 shooting, including three 3-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Creighton's leading scorer also grabbed six rebounds in his 41 minutes of floor time.
Illinois State had knocked off Wichita State on Saturday to get to the final, but fell just short. Creighton takes the automatic bid, while #15 Wichita State will have to be patient for a week to find out where they are seeded.
With a win at home against #10 Ohio State in their final regular season game, the 5th-ranked Michigan State Spartans could have claimed the Big Ten title outright, and the Spartans built a 15-point lead midway through the first half as the Buckeyes struggled to find their marks.
Despite the struggles of their star, Jared Sullinger, who was just 5-for-17 from the field and spent much of the last eight minutes on the bench with four fouls but still finished with a double-double (14 points and 10 rebounds, the Buckeyes never quit and eventually got the go-ahead bucket on a long jumper by William Buford with one second remaining in regulation.
Buford finished with one of his best games of the season, fitting for the only senior on the Ohio State squad, scoring a game-high 25 points on 8 of 14 shooting with three boards, three steals and an assist.
The Spartans had one last fling at the basket as time expired, but the ball never went near the hoop, as Ohio State took the 72-70 decision.
The result tied the Buckeyes with Michigan State and Michigan - who had topped Penn State earlier in the day - for the conference regular season lead, all three teams finishing with identical 13-5 records.
Michigan State will be the top seed in the Big Ten tournament which opens Thursday, with Ohio State #2 and Michigan the #3 seed.

(2) Duke 73 (15) Albany 61 - The Great Danes gave it their best, but Seth Curry and Mason Plumlee were simply unstoppable as the Duke Blue Devils sent Albany packing. Curry scored a game-high 26 points on 11 of 14 shooting, and Plumlee went 9-for-11 from the field for 23 points and snagged nine rebounds. Albany kept it close by hitting 63% from three-point land, making nine of 15 to Duke's 4-for-11 from beyond the arc, but the Blue Devils hit at an overall rate of 59% for the game, making 27 of 46 shots.
(7) Creighton 67 (10) Cincinnati 63 - Cincinnati became the second Big East casualty in a match-up with the Missouri Valley, after Wichita State took down Pitt yesterday and Crieghton, behind 27 points from Doug McDermott, sent the Bearcats home.
McDermott, a candidate for player of the year, had his usual exceptional game, leading all scorers by going 7-for-13 from the field with a pair of threes, 11-for-11 from the foul line and 11 boards.
The game was statistically tight, except from the foul line, where Crieghton hit 22 of 25, but the Bearcats were limited to just 4-for-9.
West Region
(12) Ole Miss 57 (5) Wisconsin 46 - Marshall Henderson led a second half comeback to help Ole Miss grab the victory from the Badgers, making Wisconsin the third #5 team to lose their opening game to a #12 seed.
Trailing 36-30 with 11:25 to play, Henderson, coming out of time out, hit a three-pointer that ignited the Rebels on a 27-10 run to close out the game. Henderson, who scored 19 points for the Rebels, had 17 during the close-out stretch, including all three of his three pointers. He had gone 0-for-9 from outside the arc prior to the final run.
Though the Rebels shot just 39% for the game, Wisconsin finished at just 25.4%, unable to solve Mississippi's zone defense. The Badgers made just 15 field goals, seven of which came from outside the three-point stripe, on 30 attempts.
(13) La Salle 63 (4) Kansas State 61 - The Explorers won their second game in two days (beat Boise State in Tuesday's First Four contest) and completed a clean sweep for the Atlantic 10 conference, which has won six tournament games without a loss.
Kansas State, trailing by 18 at the half, made a game of it, eventually taking a one-point lead late in the proceedings, but LaSalle's Jerrell Wright was solid as a rock, making clutch free throws down the stretch to eek out the win. Wright, who led all scorers with 21 points, was nearly perfect, making six of six from the field and nine of ten from the free throw line. He missed his final attempt at the line, which gave the Wildcats a chance to tie or win with 9.8 seconds left, but the Explorer defense was stout and held on for the victory.
East Region
(9) Temple 76 (8) North Carolina State 72 - The Wolfpack nearly came all the way back from an 18-point deficit, but Temple scored their final 14 points at the foul line, sealing the fifth straight win for the powerful Atlantic 10 conference, while handing the ACC its first defeat of the tournament.
Khalif Wyatt, Temple's leading scorer during the regular season, playing with an injured left thumb suffered in the first half, scored a game-high 31 points for the Owls. Though Wyatt wasn't exactly making it rain from the field, where he was 9-for-22, he made up for it at the foul line, canning 12 of 14 attempts. Temple will face the Indiana Hoosiers in the next round on Sunday. Indiana is the top seed in the East region.
(2) Miami (FL) 78 (15) Pacific 49 - Pacific, champions of the Big West conference, proved no match for the Hurricanes, regular season and tournament champion from the ACC. Miami's defense was at its usual high level, holding the Tigers to 33% shooting for the duration. Pacific didn't help itself, making just four of 11 from the free throw line.
Durand Scott had five three-pointers from eight attempts for a game-high 21 points. Miami was 12-for-22 (54.5%) from three-point range.
(1) Indiana 83 (16) James Madison 62 - Victors of the Colonial Athletic Association and winners over LIU-Brooklyn in one of Wednesday's play-in games, the James Madison Dukes proved no match for the powerful Indiana Hoosiers. Andre Nation and Charles Cook scored 42 of James Madison's 62. Indiana's scoring was more balanced, with five players in double figures.
(7) Illinois 57 (10) Colorado 49 - In a see-saw battle that had Colorado erase an 16-point half time deficit with a 21-0 run and take a five-point lead only to see the Illini finish the game on an 11-3 run, Illinois advanced to the round of 32. Illinois took down the first team from the PAC-12, which had won its previous three tourney games.
Despite a 3-for-12 mark from the field, Brandon Paul scored 17 points to lead the Fighting Illini, who will face #2 seed Miami in the next round.

Le'Bryon Nash's Career High 27 Sends Cowboys to 79-72 Win Over #2 Missouri; Tom Izzo Gets 400th Win with Spartans
College Hoops Player of the Day for Wednesday, January 25, 2012
On Monday, the Missouri Tigers learned they were ranked #2 in the nation after topping Baylor on the road, 89-88, and improving to 18-1.
Wednesday night in Stillwater, Oklahoma was another road game, but not a good one for for Missouri as they dropped a 79-72 decision to the motivated Cowboys of Oklahoma State.
Ricardo Ratliffe scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds for Missouri, but it was no match for freshman forward Le'Bryon Nash's career high 27 point outburst.
Nash and his Cowboy teammates survived 16 turnovers by shooting a sizzling 60% (31-52) from the field and nailing 12 of 14 free throws, 10 of those by fellow frosh, Brian Williams, who finished with 22. Nash was 12 of 18 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range. He also contributed four rebounds and four assists.
The 10-10 Cowboys were unlikely upsetters, having lost their last three straight, to Baylor, Iowa State and Kansas State. Missouri's loss dropped them into a tie for second place in the Big 12 at 5-2 with Baylor. Everybody in the conference is chasing #5 Kansas, which is 7-0 in the conference and 17-3 overall.
NOTABLE: Mason Plumlee had 23 points and 12 boards as the #8 Duke Blue Devils stomped Maryland, 74-61, in College Park, MD.
IN SEC play, Arnett Moultrie's 28 points and 12 rebounds led #18 Mississippi State to a 76-71 home win over LSU. The Bulldogs are 17-5 on the season.
#12 UNLV needed overtime to slip past Boise State, 77-72, as Mike Moser scored 18 points and dominated the boards, hauling down 21 rebounds. The Runnin' Rebels improved to 19-3 and are second in the Mountain West conference at 3-1, behind 4-0 San Diego State. The Aztecs, ranked 13 nationally, topped the Rebels, 69-67, on January 14.
Michigan State's Tom Izzo recorded his 400th career win as the Spartans' head coach with a 68-52 pasting of Minnesota. Izzo's 10th-ranked Spartans are 17-4 overall and 6-2 in the Big Ten, tied for first place with #4 Ohio State and #20 Michigan.
The national scoring race heated up a bit as the nation's 4th-leading scorer, Doug McDermott led #15 Creighton to a 77-69 win over Drake with a 30-point outburst. McDermott is averaging 23.5 points per game. Albany's Gerardo Suero, 5th, at 21.5 ppg, popped for 25 in Albany's 74-68 win over Binghamton.
The top two scorers in the country, Weber State's Damian Lillard (25.1 ppg) and Grambling State's Quincy Roberts (24.0) were not in action on Wednesday. Grambling State is just 2-15, and Roberts has played in just 10 games this season.

NCAA Tournament, Round of 64 Early Games Results & Recaps; #2 Missouri Dumped by Norfolk State
East Region
Cincinnati 65 Texas 59 - The Longhorns dug themselves a very deep hole, scoring just two points in the opening 12:30 of the first half, but they clawed back to tie the game at 52-all on a put-back by Johnathan Holmes at 3:45 in the second half. Cincinnati squandered a 19-point lead, but regained their composure and the lead on three consecutive baskets - one by Cashmere Wright, sandwiched between a pair of Yancy gates buckets. Texas could get no closer than four as time wore down. Gates recorded another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Florida State 66 St. Bonaventure 63 - The Bonnies, a 14 seed which got into the big dance by winning the Atlantic-10 tournament, proved their value by taking it to the Seminoles for most of the game and even had a chance to tie the contest when they had the ball with 8 seconds left. To avoid the major upset, 3-seed Florida State needed a 16-2 run to take its first lead with 5:15 left on a 3-pointer by Ian Miller.
The battle in the paint was ferocious. St. Bonaventure's Andrew Nicholson scored 19 points with seven reounds and two blocks, matched by the Seminoles' Bernard James, who scored 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting, with nine boards and three blocked shots. Florida State moves on to a match-up with 6-seed Cincinnati.
Midwest Region
North Carolina St. 79 San Diego St. 65 - 11th-seeded NC State put a whipping on the #6 seed San Diego State, out of the Mountain West conference, dominating inside and shooting a blistering 58.5% from the field. The Aztecs' Jamaal Franlin led all scorers with 23 points, but Wolfpack forward Richard Howell made 10 of 12 shots for 22 points to lead his winning squad.
Creighton 59 Alabama 58 - Led by Doug McDermott's 16 points and 10 rebounds, Creighton, the number 8 seed in the Midwest, held on for the win against #9 seed Alabama. The Bluejays took the lead for good with just over five minutes left to play, but were inefficient at the line, allowing the Crimson Tide a chance for the win, down just one point with 2.4 seconds to play, but Trevor Relaford's three-point heave was partially blocked by Josh Jones.
Georgetown 74 Belmont 59 - Jason Clark had his jumper working as he poured in 23 points for the 3-seed Hoyas, making none of 12 overall and three of five 3-pointers. The Hoyas easily handled the 14-seed Bruins, as they shot 61% and had a 30-22 rebounding edge.
North Carolina 77 Vermont 58 - Even without John Henson - who sat out again with a bruised wrist - the Vermont Catamounts were no match for the mighty Tar Heels, the region's #1 seed. Henson's replacement, James Michael MacAdoo, and Tyler Zeller each scored 17 points to pace the Heels. Zeller also had a game high 15 rebounds.
West Region
Florida 71 Virginia 45 - Billy Donovan's Gators dominated the game from start to finish, taking an eight-point lead into half time and expanding it through the remainder of the game. Florida shot 53% for the game and out-rebounded Virginia, 36-21. The Gators will face Missouri on Sunday, the winner going to the Sweet Sixteen.
Norfolk State 86 Missouri 84 - It's official. March Madness has arrived, as the 15 seed Norfolk State Spartans upset the #2 seed and #3 ranked Missouri Tigers. Missouri, which shot 52%, could never shake free in a game that saw numerous lead changes and ties. The Spartans led by two at the end, but Phil Pressey's desperation three-pointer at the buzzer clanged off the rim and Norfolk State became just the fifth #15 seed to defeat a #2 seed in tournament history. The Spartans got a huge effort from center Kyle O'Quinn, who led all scorers with 26 points and hauled in 14 rebounds.

Xavier Thames, Aztecs Rip Marquette to Capture Wooden Legacy Title
College Hoops Player of the Day for Sunday, December 1, 2013
It was a weird Sunday for a few of college basketball's Top 25 as the UAB Blazers shot just 31%, but managed to upset #16 North Carolina, 63-59; star forward Doug McDermott was held to a season-low seven points in George Washington's 60-53 victory over #20 Creighton; and, Xavier Thames scored nearly half of his team's points in San Diego State's 67-59 win over #25 Marquette.
The 5-1 Aztecs won their fourth straight to capture the final of the Wooden Legacy tournament at Fullerton, California, having already topped Charleston, 72-52, in the opening round and dumping Creighton, 86-80, in the semi-final on Friday.
Thames, a senior guard, had a career-high 29 points to pace the Aztecs. Though he could not get his two-point shots to drop (2-for-10), he was money from beyond the arc, hitting five of six three-pointers, and, at the foul line, where he canned 10 of 11.
Named tournament MVP, Thames scored 26 in the Creighton win and had 11 points in the easy win over Charleston.
With victories over two ranked teams during the holiday weekend, it's a good bet that the Aztecs will find themselves among the ranked teams when the new polls are released Monday. San Deigo State's only loss was a 69-60 setback to #6 Arizona.

UCLA Remains Perfect at 7-0, as Kyle Anderson Leads Win in Las Vegas Invitational
College Hoops Player of the Day for Friday, November 29, 2013
19th-ranked UCLA remained undefeated (7-0) with a 95-79 romp over Northwestern in the final round of the Las Vegas Invitational, hitting 13 of 17 three-pointers.
Jordan Adams, Zach LaVine and Bryce Alford each scored 18 points, helping the Bruins take a share of the round-robin tournament with Missouri, winning all four games during the tourney. The Bruins beat Morehead State and Chattanooga last weekend at home in the opening rounds, then came to Vegas and overwhelmed host Nevada, 105-84, Thursday, prior to taking down the Wildcats.
Kyle Anderson dropped in 16 points, hauled in nine rebounds and dished nine assists, earning the tournament MVP award. T.J. Warren Lights Up Hokies in 71-64 NC State Victory
College Hoops Player of the Day for Saturday, February 22, 2014
While all the lights were on at Cameron Indoor Stadium to see #5 Duke outlast #1 Syracuse, the NC State Wolfpack was doing its best to get off the tournament bubble and make themselves a sure pick out of the ACC.

The leading scorer in the ACC, Warren was 12-for-21 from the field, 2-for-6 on threes and 5-for-8 at the stripe, mixing in six boards and four steals at the 17-10 Wolfpack evened their conference record at 7-7.
Warren is tied with BYU's Tyler Haws for fourth nationally in scoring, hoisting up 23.3 points per game. Creighton's Doug McDermott leads the nation at 25.8 per game.
NC State has just four games left on the regular season schedule, with home games against North Carolina, Miami and Boston College. Their road game is at Pitt, leaving them a legitimate shot at reaching the tournament if they can split these games or upset either the Panthers or Tar Heels.
